Foundations in Jewellery & Metalsmithing

Class Description

This five-day intensive introduces students to the foundational techniques of jewellery making and metalsmithing in a relaxed, hands-on studio environment. Whether you are completely new to jewellery or looking to strengthen your existing skills, the workshop is designed to help you develop confidence at the bench while gaining a deeper understanding of the tools, materials, and processes used in the studio.

Each student will work at their own jeweller's bench as we explore essential techniques through demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and individual guidance. Techniques will include sawing and piercing, filing, forming, texturing, torch work and soldering, cold connections, an introduction to basic stone setting, surface finishing, and patinas.

Rather than simply following a series of steps, students will be encouraged to understand why techniques work, how different approaches affect the metal, and how to make informed decisions while working. The goal is not only to complete projects, but to develop the confidence and problem-solving skills needed to continue exploring jewellery making independently.

My goal is to create a relaxed and supportive learning environment where questions, curiosity, and experimentation are encouraged, and every student receives individual guidance throughout the week. We'll work through a series of foundational exercises and projects, but there will also be room for exploration and personal expression.

Mistakes are simply part of the learning process - they're opportunities to understand the material more deeply and become a more confident maker. As your skills develop, you'll be encouraged to make thoughtful choices, solve problems creatively, and begin developing your own voice as a maker.
