Over the course of the retreat, Ann will guide you through the fascinating process of patterning mokume gane.

You’ll begin with pre-fused mokume gane billets, learning how to use chisels to selectively indent and move the layers of metal beneath the surface. As the patterned metal is hammered back to flat, the hidden layers emerge, creating unique rivers, lines and shapes within the sheet.

There is an element of discovery to every piece. A pattern that begins as a simple mark can develop into something unexpected as the metal is worked. Ann will demonstrate different approaches and encourage you to experiment, respond to the material and develop patterns of your own.

Alongside the studio time, the retreat offers an opportunity to slow down, take inspiration from the Irish landscape and enjoy the companionship of other makers.

Ann will introduce you to the principles and possibilities of mokume gane patterning, including:

• Understanding the structure and characteristics of pre-fused mokume gane

• Chisel patterning techniques for creating lines, movement and texture

• Developing both abstract and representational patterns

• Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape

• Hammering patterned mokume gane back to flat

• Working with the material to reveal and control the pattern

• Creating multiple patterned sheets for use in future work

• Approaching the design and construction of finished jewellery

• Exploring simple box construction, depending on experience and progress

During the retreat you will create a collection of uniquely patterned mokume gane sheets to take your work in different directions.

You’ll have time to experiment with a variety of patterns before selecting your favourite pieces to develop into finished work. Depending on your experience, you may create one or more simple pieces of jewellery, or explore the construction of a small box.

The finished pieces will reflect your own ideas and responses to the material. No two patterned sheets will be the same, making each piece of mokume gane an individual record of the marks, movements and decisions made at the bench.
