Workshop Overview

Discover the beauty of local pigments with our Artist in Residence and eco-therapist Caroline Schofield.

There is a growing interest in bringing together ecology, sustainability and creativity. Collecting and working with natural pigments is a fascinating way to learn how people made paint before the use of synthetic mediums, taking us closer to the landscape and living world around us.

Join Caroline for a day learning how to make paint and art materials from local earth pigments. She will begin the day with a presentation on using earth pigments in art and the philosophy behind working with natural paints. We will then visit the foreshore at Clochan Pier and take a short rocky walk to see exposed earth pigments in situ.

After lunch, Caroline will demonstrate how paints are made from the pigments using natural, non-toxic binders. In the afternoon there will be time to experiment with the paints you have made and to create a series of beautiful, expressive small images exploring the range of colours derived from the local landscape.

These images will be brought together in a simple frame, creating a finished sample piece that displays the different earth-based paints you have created. This framed work will be yours to take home as both a reference and a lasting record of the day.

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in natural pigments; no artistic experience is required. It is also a great introduction for artists who wish to explore making and using natural paint

About Caroline Schofield

Caroline’s deep love of the natural world has been with her since childhood. While studying to qualify as an Eco-psychology Practitioner, she came to understand the connections between the wellbeing of the natural world and her professional career in mental health services. After graduating, she combined her interpersonal skills and passion for being in close connection with the natural world with the desire to serve others.

Caroline loves to be creative and can often be found outdoors with sketchbooks and notepads with nature as her muse. In her work at Guided By Nature, she offers her skills as a group facilitator, her knowledge of eco-psychology, and her artistic ability to provide opportunities for nature-loving people to come together to experience enjoyable, nourishing and meaningful time with nature.

Caroline is a co-founder of Dilyn Natur Guided by Nature, a woman-owned community interest company (CIC) based in beautiful North Wales – Goggled Cymru. They offer walks, workshops, bespoke mountain days, continuing professional development (CPD), workplace wellness events and other services for organisations. Their aim is for everyone they work with to feel great, have adventures, get creative, build their skills and discover special places.

We are delighted to welcome Caroline to Mulranny Arts and we look forward to working with her
