Class Description

Starts with collecting items that interest you from driftwood and twigs to bits of rust, broken pottery or jewellery, scraps of this and that.

The next stage is to know how to assemble and attach one to the other. This is where this class comes in handy and you will learn various skills of attachment.

What you will learn:

Wirework: Twisting, binding, coiling and wrapping.

Posts: How to insert posts into different materials such as rock, wood and even plastic when  you need it.

Riveting: If you have metals that need to be attached, perhaps a rivet will work and riveting metals is neat and strong.

Wrapping: Using fibre and cords to weave a connection is a great additional component to any sculpture or art piece. Several weaving techniques will be explored.

Glueing: Using glue is an option at times. Some glues are stronger than others and it is useful to know the best glue to use for different materials.

Wood Prep: Using wood in your work might need sanding, chiseling, shaping or sawing. All of these will be practiced.

Stone Prep: Often stones will need to be ground on one end to support or attach something. Practice on the grinder to get the surfaces you need.

Drilling: Using a Dremel drill comes in really handy. Perhaps a drill press might be needed. You will become familiar with all of these tools.

Glass: This might be a material you want to add to your work. How do you attach glass to wood or stone? These challenges will be discussed and demonstrated.

Soldering: A skill that could be useful for glass or metals; each requiring a different set of skills, tools and materials.

While learning these skills, most of them will be applied to a wall hanging project that you will complete on day two. Everybody will make something uniquely personal to themselves and be a reminder of how to assemble and connect all those found objects you could incorporate into work.
