About The Class:
Join artist and instructor Lindsay LeBlanc for a special edition of From Field to Flame, where you'll explore the beauty of marine botanicals—seaweeds, coastal flora, and shoreline forms—through glass art.
The workshop begins with a guided coastal field study, where you’ll observe, sketch, and gather inspiration from plant life in its natural habitat. Back in the studio, Lindsay will guide you in translating those forms into glass, helping you capture their organic movement and detail through flame working.
Workshop Schedule
-
Guided shoreline walk & introduction to marine botanical glass sculptures.
Observing seaweeds and ocean flora in their natural habitat, sketching, taking notes, and gathering inspiration. -
Introduction to glass color blending and sculpting simple aquatic forms.
Focus on capturing translucency, subtle gradients, and the flowing shapes of seaweed and underwater plant life. -
Continued exploration of marine plant structures and their movement.
Sculpting individual components like fronds, air bladders, holdfasts, and other anatomical details. Incorporating textures and layering techniques to mimic natural marine surfaces. -
Assembling detailed components into complete glass sculptures.
Exploring composition, depth, and the dynamic forms of underwater growth.
Key Skills and Techniques:
Color Blending in the Flame
Learn to create realistic shading, gradients, and depth that mimic the translucency and variation of marine plant life.Sculpting Marine Botanicals
Develop techniques to form fronds, air bladders, stems, and other elements of seaweed and ocean flora with precision and flow.Assembling Multi-Part Sculptures
Combine individually sculpted components into cohesive, lifelike botanical forms inspired by your field observations.Detail, Texture & Movement
Train your eye to capture subtle details—ripples, folds, twists—and bring the organic motion of underwater plants into your work.Glass Safety & Technique
Practice proper handling of borosilicate glass, flame chemistry, torch control, and safe studio habits.
