Class Description

Mulranny Arts is honoured to present this special two-day encaustic workshop with Master Mixed Media Art Instructor Christina Lovisa, internationally recognised for her inspiring teaching style and innovative approach to encaustic and collage. While facilitating her artist retreat at Mulranny Arts this March, Christina has generously made a limited number of places available for participants to join her for an intensive two-day workshop, offering a unique opportunity to experience her expert guidance, creative process and supportive studio environment.

In this immersive encaustic workshop, Christina guides participants through transforming landscape photographs into expressive mixed-media artworks inspired by memory, place and personal story. Using collage, paint and encaustic techniques, students will explore how to translate real world imagery into evocative “short-story” landscapes that capture emotion and experience rather than simple representation.

Participants will learn how to select compelling source images, edit and prepare them for creative use and layer wax, paint and collage to build depth and atmosphere. Through demonstrations and hands-on studio practice, Christina shares her intuitive mixed-media process, encouraging artists to interpret landscapes through their own artistic voice. The focus is on creative exploration, storytelling through texture and wax, and developing a personal approach to encaustic landscape painting.

Who is this workshop for?

This two-day workshop is suitable for students with at least basic encaustic experience. Support and guidance will be provided throughout, making it accessible for those quiet new to encaustic while still offering depth, inspiration, and new techniques for artists who already have experience with the medium.

If you require accommodation, please contact us.

Art was probably a lifelong passion for me, but squashed in high school by my guidance counsellor, who said ‘You’re never going to make any money as an artist.’ I was in Deep River, which is where the scientists who work at the nuclear plant in Chalk River live. Everybody was science-based there, so when somebody excels in arts, they think ‘Huh, how do we get this person into a science field where they can straighten themselves out?’ So the guidance counsellor says ‘We need to get you into a science field that is somewhat artistic,’ so I became a dental hygienist. That’s where they pushed me, and I did that for about seven years. And then I woke up and said, ‘What’s going on here?’

“But it was one of my patients who told me she was taking art classes now that she was retired. And every time she came in, I’d ask her more questions about her art. I realized I cared more about her art than her teeth, and that’s when I thought, ‘I should explore this art thing.’ I needed to do something different. So I started taking classes. And the rest is history! Christina’s Website
