Class Description

Over the two days, students will gain a considerable understanding of how the ancient practice of spoon carving can be approached with some basic and accessible edge tools. We will first look at the wood that can be used and the benefits of working with green wood (wet and unseasoned) that has been acquired locally.

Safety is paramount, and before we learn how to reduce the stock into a spoon shape, we must understand the structure of wood and how it will react to our actions, with sharp and potentially dangerous implements. This will also help with the fun stage of designing the spoon.

Spoon carving is a very rewarding form of woodwork. You are making something utilitarian that has the potential to be beautiful. Interestingly, the spoon is the first tool you learn how to use as a child. Why not also make it the first tool you make?

The course will be provided by Cónan Kilcoyne. A local guitarmaker, musician and former architect. He will ensure that everyone makes at least one spoon over the course and will provide enough information, references and guidance for the students to feel confident to make another unsupervised.
